Software Patents: Developments in Europe
On 6 March 2005, the last significant obstacle to the introduction of the European Commission’s controversial Software Patenting Directive was removed. The Directive effectively adopts the European Patent Office’s controversial approach, which has allowed some patenting of software-related inventions via an expansive interpretation of the definition of “invention” in the European Patent Convention.
Dr Justine Pila will provide a timely discussion of some of the issues surrounding the impending adoption of the Directive and the current European approach to patenting software.
