    Does Patenting Help High-Tech Start-Ups?

    by

    Date: May 2009

Abstract: Using data on all high- and medium-tech start-ups in the UK in 2000, this paper looks at whether the decision to patent a ects subsequent growth in total assets between 2001 and 2005. Identifying any patent e ect relies on speci c assumptions concerning the timing and nature of the patent decision. The low survival rate of rms, 40% fail before 2005, means we control for sample selection. The ndings suggest that patentees may have asset growth of between 6% to 17% per annum higher that non-patentees. There is some evidence that EPO patents are particularly bene cial to the smallest start-ups.
