Intellectual Property Research Institute of Australia Working Paper No. 06/2009 Does Patenting Help High-Tech Start-Ups? by Christian Helmers and Mark Rogers Date: May 2009 Abstract: Using data on all high- and medium-tech start-ups in the UK in 2000, this paper looks at whether the decision to patent aects subsequent growth in total assets between 2001 and 2005. Identifying any patent eect relies on specic assumptions concerning the timing and nature of the patent decision. The low survival rate of rms, 40% fail before 2005, means we control for sample selection. The ndings suggest that patentees may have asset growth of between 6% to 17% per annum higher that non-patentees. There is some evidence that EPO patents are particularly benecial to the smallest start-ups. Downloads: PDF [255K] |
